What the meat is fetching
Carcass prices per kilogram at the abattoir, after slaughter and grading. National averages, updated weekly.
These are not live animal prices. A carcass kilogram costs roughly double a live kilogram, because an animal only dresses out at around half its body weight — use the live prices above when you are pricing an animal, and these when you are working out what it is worth to an abattoir.

Where these numbers come from
Two different sources, because they answer two different questions. Live animal prices come from Vleisprys, which publishes weekly auction averages for the Northern Free State. Carcass prices are the weekly Absa series published nationally by the Red Meat Producers' Organisation.
We fetch both straight from the publishers a few times a day and show them unchanged — nothing is adjusted, averaged or re-weighted. They are averages: what a particular animal fetches depends on weight, grade, condition, breed, region and the day, so treat these as a reference point for pricing a listing rather than as a quote.
Live pricing inside the app is the number that matters when you list. Weather below is forecast data, shown to help you pick a day for the road.
